These are center-crops at full pixel size comparing a state of the art point-and-shoot Panasonic FZ-50 with a Canon 20D DSLR. Notice the 20D shows every hair on the flower where the FZ-50 is a mushy glossy mess with blown highlights and the fuzzy flower looks shiny & smooth. The airplane shot shows what happens with some curves applied indicating the Panasonic image is already stretched to the max, oversharpened and how much more play the DSLR jpeg has.
Note: these were part of my commentary in a public discussion on the rec.photo discussion groups on usenet from 2-9-07 and 10-3-07. They are not my photos, just editorial commentary. I just now (3-15-08) cropped them tight to remove most of the photos but it seemed best to leave enough for the record since that discussion never seems to rest. It was never my intent to say this was my photography.
