Tokina 300mm f/2.8 + Canon 500D +2 diopter closeup lens at f/9 1/180 second ISO 3200 in diffused window light on a Nikon D200 hand held at closest focus distance of 2 feet from the sensor, the front element of the lens is 1 foot from the sensor, the full focal range is only about the depth of that dollar bill.
The first shot is with a 50mm extension tube, the second with a +2 diopter closeup lens. The closeup lens lets me meter but the working distance is too close for skittish insects and even though I could stop down a little further, the depth of field is very shallow and magnification greater. The actual f/stop would calculate out much larger than what the aperture ring says with an extension tube and I used a -5 exposure compensation to meter.
