             Franciscan Manzanita,  San Francisco Manzanita or Raven's Manzanita

             (Arctostaphylos hookeri var. ravenii) Only one naturally occuring plant survives in the

             world in The Presidio. Can be propagated well. Hookeri is is a popular species for

             ornamental cultivars that perform well in gardens and there are many wild subspecies.

             Gravel or larger rocks make a nice disease free mulch. Acid rocky soils, serpentine.

             "densely long-bristly & puberulent [fuzzy]... seed 2 mm... coat deeply netted...coastal

             scrub" -well marked from the paintbrushes related to latifolia & douglasii by the

             brilliant spathelike calyx -Marin Flora. A Flora of San Francisco lists: C. foliosa,

             francisciana, latifolia, latifolia var. wightii, latifolia var. rubra & miniata as local

             species.
